Steel Structure Fabrication Service: QA Steps Between Cutting and Packing

Steel Fab Qa Featured Wm

A steel structure fabrication service is judged by what happens between cutting and packing. Every member should pass the same quality chain: material check, cutting accuracy, fit-up, weld inspection, coating and final dimensional control. This article explains the QA steps you should expect and the records you should receive with the shipment.

Incoming material check: mill certificates first

Fabrication quality starts before cutting. The factory should check that delivered steel matches the order: grade, thickness, flatness and the mill certificate for each heat. Material that arrives off-grade or with wrong thickness poisons every later step. Ask how the factory segregates material by grade and heat, and see our guide to steel grades for steel buildings (Q235B, Q355B, S355) for what the markings mean.

Cutting, drilling and fit-up accuracy

Member geometry is where fabrication errors show up at erection. Holes that are a few millimeters off can force site re-drilling; member lengths that drift cause fit-up problems at splices. A serious fabricator controls these with jigs, templates and dimensional checks.

Check What it controls Typical tolerance guidance
Member length Frame fit at splices and bases Within a few millimeters per member, per project spec
Hole positions Bolted connections line up Hole group accuracy per connection detail
Camber and sweep Rafter geometry under load Per shop drawing and standard
Squareness and level Frame assembly on site Per fabrication standard

Weld inspection and welder qualification

Welds are checked first by visual inspection — size, profile, undercut, porosity — and, where the project requires it, by non-destructive testing such as ultrasonic or magnetic particle inspection. Welders should hold current certificates for the processes and positions they use. Ask which welds are subject to NDT on your project and request the weld inspection report with the shipment.

Coating, marking and packing QA

After welding, members are cleaned (shot blasting is the common standard for export), primed and finished, and the coating film thickness is checked. Then comes marking: each member carries its code so the site crew can find it in the packing list. Packing QA verifies that the right components go into the right bundles or crates, with protective corners and moisture protection, matching the packing plan used for shipping.

FAQ

What is the difference between visual and NDT weld inspection?

Visual inspection checks the weld surface — size, profile, undercut, cracks and porosity — and is done on every weld. NDT (ultrasonic, magnetic particle or dye penetrant) checks internal soundness and is typically specified for critical joints or by project standards. Both have a place; NDT is not a substitute for good visual control.

How do I know the steel grade is what I paid for?

Request mill certificates for the heats used and compare them with the order. Check that member markings match the certificate heat numbers, and, if in doubt, use an independent lab or inspection company to verify samples.

What tolerances should I expect on steel structure fabrication?

Tolerances are defined by the project standard and the shop drawings — typically a few millimeters for member length and hole positions, with stricter values on connection-critical dimensions. Ask the supplier to state the standard they fabricate to before you order.
